The Stone Forest in Yunnan Province, China is known as the ‘First Wonder of the World’, and if you ask us, it’s easy to see why. It’s definitely one of the best and most unusual places to visit in Yennan.

The Stone Forest is located approximately three hours drive from Kunming itself and covers a massive area of around 96,000 acres, within which it features large and small stone forests made of limestone. It seems pretty obvious when you look at it, but the stone forest has taken its name not only from the vast array of rocks forming a ‘forest’, but also because many of the rock formations themselves actually look like trees.
You can easily spend anywhere between two and four hours at the site, wondering around the simply stunning landscape looking at the incredibly intricate rock formations. Many of the formations are actually said to look like animals, humans, plants and more so it’s well worth spending a little time taking it all in. If you prefer, it’s easy enough to venture out and discover some of the less crowded areas of the site too.
Other notable features that can be seen at the Stone Forest include ‘Strange Wind Cave’. This is formed from an underground river, hot spring and cave. At certain times of the year (between August and November) impressive gales of wind than can last up to three minutes sweep from the cave every half an hour. There is also a two mile long but narrow lake, coincidentally known as ‘Long Lake’ that features small island in the center as well as underwater stalactites and stalagmites.
Whilst in Kunming, be aware that some travel agencies around the city may appear to sell cheap packages to go and visit the Stone Forest. Although you will get there in the end, it is worth knowing that some of these packages are actually sold as ‘shopping tours’ that require you to spend time and money at various shops before actually getting to the Stone Forest. You have been warned!
